Pressure Relief Group Information:

Gamblers Anonymous does not recommend financial bailouts. Bailing out a recovering gambler robs him/her of their remaining self esteem. Although a bailout may seem to be the easy way out, it is good for the recovery of the compulsive gambler to be held responsible for their actions.

Gamblers Anonymous offers some tools to deal with the financial recovery of their members. It is called a Pressure Relief Group session.

  • A pressure relief group session is a budgeting session that is held with a few  GA members that have achieved recovery in this area  in an effort to alleviate the financial pressures that tend to cloud recovery for many members.
  • Pressure relief is accomplished by listing and prioritizing the existing debts and assets of the member in a way that makes sense. It makes a more orderly approach possible while at the same time providing experience strength and hope to the member.

The objective is to allow the new member to firstly document the debts, (getting them out of the thoughts and keeping these items from rolling around in the addict's head seems to lessen the anxiety a great deal),  then correctly ascertain the members actual responsibilities and prioritize them both.

  • At  a pressure group meeting, GA members experienced in effective debt management assist the member with suggestions that will alleviate pressure as well as disclose any matters that will require legal or other professional help.

These forms and arrangements are available at most GA meetings. They can also be ordered directly from the GA International Service Office.

Regular attendance at GA meetings and using the GA 12 Recovery Steps are the best treatment for recovering gamblers/ adrenalin addicts.

The GA recovery steps are adapted with permission from the AA twelve steps, which were written in 1937 from an accumulation of spiritual principles from various recovery and religious organizations.

These steps are non-denominational thereby opening  GA membership to all races, religions,  professions and social levels.
